Nova Scotia opens key facility in its major health care overhaul for Halifax area

HALIFAX — A key component of Nova Scotia’s massive health-care redevelopment plan is complete, with the official opening of a community outpatient centre in suburban Halifax.

Premier Tim Houston was on hand recently to open the Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre, aimed at serving patients who live outside Halifax’s downtown core.

Houston says the clinic’s purpose is to reduce pressure on other health facilities in the Halifax area that provide outpatient services.

The clinic is expected to offer services such as initial visits with specialists, post-surgery followups, blood collection and X-ray imaging, and is equipped with 100 clinical spaces and 24 dialysis stations.

In August 2020, EllisDon construction was awarded a nearly $260-million contract to design, build and maintain the outpatient clinic, which is scheduled to welcome its first patients Nov. 20.

The outpatient centre is part of a major health-care infrastructure overhaul across the Halifax Regional Municipality that will include a redevelopment of the Halifax Infirmary.
