B.C. reschedules Highway 17A repairs until new year

DELTA, B.C. – British Columbia’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the City of Delta and local stakeholders have opted to reschedule repairs to the Highway 17A crossing over Highway 99 until 2024.

The Highway 17A crossing over Highway 99 was damaged on July 18, 2023, when it was struck by an over-height vehicle. Repairs to the crossing will be extensive and involve demolition and girder installation.

“Four months after the initial damage, we are ready to go at anytime with repairs to the Highway 17A crossing. After hearing of additional concerns about traffic impacts over the holiday season, we’re taking our cue from those most affected by construction and are delaying this work until the new year,” B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming said in a statement.

Following the incident, the ministry worked on a plan for repairs to the heavily damaged crossing which involved consultations with the City of Delta, emergency responders, the Delta Farmers Institute, HUB Cycling and TransLink.

The completion of engineering means construction could begin, but “the repairs require lane closures and detours, and concerns were raised by Delta’s business community about the effect to businesses during the important holiday season,” the release stated.

Work will be scheduled over a 12-week period rather than the previous eight-week plan to allow for winter weather and is now expected to be complete by early April, an important timeline as identified by the local farming community.

The repair schedule and associated closures and detours will be communicated in advance of the start of repairs in January 2024, the release said.
