David Carey named new CEO for OPPI

TORONTO – The Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPP) has announced David Carey as its new CEO.

Most recently, he served as co-executive director at The Bentway, where he helped “advance one of Toronto’s most innovative public space initiatives and worked closely with partners, communities and planners to reimagine how people connect with urban spaces,” a release reads.

Prior to that, he held senior government relations and philanthropy roles at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

In announcing his new role, Carey reflected on the professional planners he worked with during his time at The Bentway.

“I had the great pleasure to work closely with many professional planners during my time at The Bentway and saw firsthand the incredible value and impact they bring to every table, every conversation and every undertaking,” he said in a statement.

“Like me, planners value public space, active transportation, thriving landscapes, and community-oriented developments. They’re full of imagination but advance their work patiently and thoughtfully by building systems for the public good – systems that strengthen cities, rural, and conservation areas across the province. I’m honoured to join this work and start a new chapter with OPPI.”

“David’s leadership comes at an important moment for the Institute and the profession, as OPPI launches our new Strategic Plan, ELEVATE 2030. His experience bringing people, ideas, and public spaces together will help OPPI continue to elevate the voice of registered professional planners, deepen member engagement, and champion the vital role planning plays in shaping communities across Ontario,” added Andria Leigh, OPPI council chair.
