WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Heavy Construction Association (MHCA) recently received a commemorative piece of the concrete barriers that once stood at Portage and Main, presented by MD Steele Construction, who led the intersection reopening project.
The company “transformed one of the intersection’s iconic concrete barriers into a unique keepsake,” states the MHCA in its newsletter. “Each piece was carefully cut into the outline of the City of Winnipeg, creating a lasting symbol of a project that reshaped one of Canada’s most recognizable intersections.”
Designed by local Anishinaabe artist Jordan Stranger, the keepsakes feature one of four original designs representing the four corners of Portage and Main.
The MHCA noted it was honoured to receive the Two Rivers keepsake, which celebrates the meeting of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. The design depicts the splash of a walleye as sage falls to bless the land and the community nearby.
