Vancouver mayor announces Kits Pool reopening

Vancouver mayor announces Kits Pool reopening
KYLE PEARCE/WIKIMEDIA COMMONS — Vancouver mayor Ken Sim announced July 5 that Kitsilano Pool will reopen on Aug. 7.

VANCOUVER – Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim announced July 5 Kitsilano Pool will reopen on Aug. 7 barring unforeseen challenges.

The pool, a popular and long-standing summer destination in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood, was renovated in 2018 but was closed last year due to ongoing leaks that posed health and safety risks, a City of Vancouver release said.

A June 2024 announcement said the pool would remain closed to allow staff to address core issues.

“Closing Kits Pool was a disappointment shared by the entire city, but we didn’t give up. We knew we couldn’t lose this beloved asset, and thanks to the hard work of our city staff, Scott Construction, and expert Jeff Stibbart, we’re ensuring that Kits Pool will continue to thrive as a vibrant community hub,” Sim said.

Stibbart is an engineer providing pro-bono advice to the city as repairs get underway to extend the pool’s lifespan by approximately two years while plans for a new facility are developed.

Last week Sim and city coun. Sarah Kirby-Yung passed a motion to move forward with a modernized replacement for Kits Pool including looking at funding methods such as a dedicated fund for donations and corporate sponsorships, the release said.

“Every Vancouverite has a memory from Kits Pool. It’s where many of us learned to swim, where we met up with friends on sunny days, and where families enjoyed summer vacations. As one of the most iconic pools in Canada, our council is dedicated to ensuring it remains a centerpiece of our city while we move forward with plans for a new facility,” Sim said.
