City of Edmonton upgrades Compost School

City of Edmonton upgrades Compost School

EDMONTON – The City of Edmonton is upgrading its Compost School facility with reopening slated for this fall.

The Compost School provides free composting workshops to help Edmontonians gain hands-on experience with a variety of composting methods. The existing facility was designed and constructed in the 1990s and is in need of updating, a City of Edmonton release said.

Located beside the John Janzen Nature Centre in southwest Edmonton, the year-round facility will temporarily close for upgrades in the summer to make the Compost School more accessible and more engaging for visitors and events, the release added.

Construction is anticipated to last from June to September and involves re-landscaping the site, a new deck and shed, additional water fill stations and interpretive signs for visitors.

The Compost School reached a record number of visitors in 2023, the release said, and with the site closed over the summer composting information is available via a number of resources including  composting experts from the City of Edmonton hosting Life Skills: Composting and Soil Building courses at Edmonton Public Library branches .
