CALGARY, ALTA. — PCL Construction was recently awarded one of two contracts for the Green Line LRT – SE Project which will advance construction of the Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF).
The MSF is a large, multi-building complex that will support day-to-day operations of the Green Line, including the storage, maintenance and preparation of light rail vehicles, a release reads. It will cover around 26,000 m² over 2.25 hectares.
PCL’s scope of work includes site grading, underground utilities and construction of building foundations. This will establish the base for the facility’s maintenance shop, train storage building and associated operations and administrative spaces.
Work also includes site stripping and rough grading across the building footprint and surrounding areas, construction of drainage infrastructure and retaining walls, installation of underground services and duct banks and protection of existing utilities.
Foundation work will include subgrade preparation and cast-in-place concrete as well as embedded mechanical and electrical components and anchor bolts to support future structural systems, the release adds.
Construction began in late May and is well underway. The work is expected to be completed later this year.Â
 was also awarded a contract in June to deliver the structural steel that will form the primary framework of the MSF’s three buildings. Supreme was the lead fabricator and erector of the Calgary Bow Tower, states the release.
Supreme Steel will began work this month, with offsite fabrication happening in late summer. Installation of the steel will begin next year.
Once complete, the MSF will function as an integrated operations hub for the Green Line and will include:
- A three‑level maintenance shop
- LRV storage tracks and service lanesÂ
- A train wash and interior cleaning facility
- A body shop for exterior and interior repairs
- Component repair shops and parts storage
- Administrative and operational office spaceÂ
